Ways or styles of vaping

There are really two styles of vaping, mouth to lung vaping (MTL) or Sub-Ohm/direct to lung vaping (DTL). Both of these are dictated by the vape kits themselves.


The MTL style of vaping is the one that resembles smoking a cigarette the most, this is due to the fact that you use them by inhaling into your mouth first and then into your lungs, similar to a conventional cigarette. The starter vape kits are generally smaller and more basic and the starter e-liquids used with them are higher in PG (Propylene Glycol) and a higher nicotine level.


The Sub-Ohm/DTL style is where you take a long inhale and you inhale directly into your lungs. The Sub-Ohm vape kits tend to be bigger have various controls for the tanks, coils and airflow whilst also being larger. Sub-Ohm vape kits are designed for more advanced vapers. The E-liquid used with them is generally higher in VG (Vegetable Glycerine) and lower in nicotine. The higher VG content allows for the bigger clouds which intern should be used with a lower nicotine level, due to the amount of vapour produced. Why would I Sub-Ohm Vape?

There are two main features of a sub ohm e cig kit that could make this a good reason to switch.


  1. More vapour – Greater cloud making capacity
  2. More flavour – Intensified e-liquid flavours

Simply put, sub-ohm vaping gives you the capacity to produce larger clouds whilst experiencing a fuller e-liquid flavour.


It’s not just all about using a coil with a resistance that measures less than 1 ohm, your choice in e-liquids is equally important. Each e-liquid in the vaping industry are made up of two ingredients and you will need to think about the VG/PG ratio, and the best one for you.

Beginner Guide to Sub Ohm Vaping

If you were to ask anyone who is already sub-ohm vaping, they will likely tell you that you should be using a higher ratio of VG rather than PG in your vape flavours. This is because VG (Vegetable Glycerin) controls how much vapour is being produced. Higher VG e-liquids will feel smoother on the inhale whereas PG (Propylene Glycol) increases the level of throat hit you get in your vape juice.

Although Sub-Ohm kits produce more intense flavour and larger amounts of vapour, the amount of e-liquid used is increased and while coil life is decreased, more than using MTL kits. This is due to the higher power vaporising the liquid at a higher temperature than a standard MTL kit, which causes the coils to be changed sooner.

How do I Sub-Ohm? Recommend Starter Vaping Kits

If you have decided to go down the route of sub-ohm vaping, there is a vast array of e-cigarettes for you to pick from. Remember when buying your vape device to look at the ohms reading for the resistance of the coil. If the resistance measures less than 1 ohm then this is sub-ohm vaping compatible. Any device that’s over 30 watts of power is most suitable for sub-ohm vaping.


Another point to note, is that if you have been smoking for a while you may not be able to adjust to the different style of vaping of Sub-Ohm kits straight away. We would recommend using a MTL device until you are confident enough to try sub-ohm vaping.

What types of Sub-Ohm Kit are available?

Some sub-ohm kits found in the UK and the rest of the world are adjustable, so the ability to lower or increase the wattage or voltage is available with the touch of a button. This is also one of the main variations between direct to lung or mouth to lung vaping experiences and many will have a wide variation of wattages that can be used.
