Mods FAQ

What is a mod?

The term "Mod" is believed to be derived from the word "modify". Vapers began to modify their devices in the early days of Vape Mods UK and global manufacturers, allowing them to produce more power and the rest, as they say, is history! Vaping mods are now referred to as a device that a tank connects to and holds the batteries.

Do I need a Mod?

Vape Mods UK wide are intended for individuals who have been vaping for a long time. Most Vaping mods contain a plethora of functions which are not needed for beginners.

What are the advantages of a Mod?

Mods are used primarily because of their features, one of the most important being Variable Wattage, the setting which allows the user the amount of power going to the coil. Other features include circuit protection, temperature control and many others.

What kind of battery life can I expect from a Variable Wattage Mod?

Mods in general usually operate with single or dual 18650 batteries. Each battery has a rating of around 2000mAh. In comparison to a beginner vape kit which can vary between 350mAh to around 800mAh or more.

What power differences can I expect with the use of a Mod?

Mods come in various flavours and styles but the thing most vapers look at is the power rating. Some Mods have power options which can reach the high 200’s, this has to do with the power requirements of their coils. You can find more information on the subject of mods and atomizer resistance via our Beginners Guide to Sub-Ohm Vaping Guide

What are the different types of mods?

There are various different types of mods with the main three being either Variable Wattage, Variable Voltage or Mechanical Mods. Variable Wattage and Variable Voltage work in a very similar way with the chip inside the device regulating the power to the coil within the tank attached to the mod. Mechanical Mods do not have any chipset inside and are for use by a select group of vapers that know how to use these safely to get the best results out of their kits.

Why are some mods cheap yet some are really expensive?

Price on devices differs due to many factors. There is such a huge selection of vaping mods on the market currently and with every new one that comes out, the technology continues to advance. The higher the build quality, materials used, power output, battery capacity and many other features can determine the price of a device. Sometimes it is simply that one manufacturer to another will price their device higher but usually you will find the more you spend, the better the quality of the device you will get. There are a few great exceptions to this rule with mods like the Nunchaku 2 Mod from Uwell and the Species Mod from Smok being not too expensive but have a huge selection of features and the performance to match!

What is the most popular mod?

The Smok Alien (RHA220) Mod has been at the forefront of the Sub Ohm vaping scene for a long time due to the impressive performance and reliability. Unfortunately Smok have discontinued production of the Alien Mod but there is good news! Smok realised the popularity of this product and from this, the Species Mod was created. The Species mod by Smok functions using dual 18650 batteries, has temperature control and a top wattage of 230W. The Species is set to become one of the best selling products from Smok and it will pave the way for more innovative products in the future.

What is better, internal or external battery?

Everyone will have their own personal preference when answering this question. All batteries in vape kits are rechargeable, whether it is via a USB cable for internal batteries or in a seperate charger for external batteries. Devices with an internal battery are very simple to use and the bonus of not having lots of batteries laying around is definitely a positive, although if the battery dies, you will need to replace the whole device. The bonus of using external batteries is they allow you to simply change them when they have lost charge with fully charged batteries. Having spare batteries, charging externally is ideal for any vaper that uses their device a lot and doesn’t want to have to wait for an internal battery to charge before being able to use their vape kit.

Do all mods have temperature control?

Not all mods have temperature control but there is a large selection of vape mods that do. Almost all variable wattage mods will now come with a temperature mode as standard. This will allow the vaper to determine the temperature that the coils will reach giving an accurate vape every time. To use temperature mode, you will need to ensure that your vape tank uses a suitable wire for this mode such as Nickel (Ni200) or Stainless Steel (SS316/SS316L).
