PG and VG or Propylene glycol and Vegetable glycerin are two key ingredients in vape juice. They carry the flavour and nicotine and create the vapour you inhale.

Propylene glycol (PG) is a thin flavourless liquid which carries flavour and also delivers a stronger throat hit when vaped.

Vegetable glycerine (VG) is a thicker, sweet tasting liquid that also carries flavour, although less well than Propylene glycol. It creates more vapour than Propylene glycol, so a liquid that is high in VG will create larger vapour clouds.

The majority of e-liquids will use both PG and VG and vary the amount of each depending on the desired vaping experience and the type of device the liquid is designed for. This combination of PG and VG is known as the PG/VG ratio.

The best PG/VG ratio depends on the type of vape kit that the vape juice is going to be used in.

MTL: Mouth to Lung (MTL) vape kits are best suited to 50/50 vape juices. This will deliver an experience that is similar to smoking, with a noticeable throat hit and a tighter draw, making this a good option for anyone who looking to make the switch.

DTL: Direct to Lung (DTL) vape kits, which are also known as sub-ohm vape kits work best with high VG vape juices, with 70VG / 30PG or 80VG / 20PG the most common ratios. This combination will deliver more vapour and thicker clouds, with the amount of vapour increasing as the VG amount increases

Nicotine Salts or nic-salts as they are commonly known deliver a smoother experience so are perfect for anyone looking for a less harsh throat hit. They are also absorbed quickly by the body, so cravings will be satisfied quicker. Nic salts are designed to be used in MTL kits such as vape pens and pods kits.

Freebase e-liquids contain freebase nicotine which delivers a harsher throat hit when compared to salt nicotine. The degree of harshness increases as the amount of nicotine increases. With freebase nicotine the rate of absorption is lower than nic salts, so it may take longer to satisfy cravings, however the cravings are likely to be satisfied for longer. Freebase e-liquids are also designed to be used in MTL kits such as vape pens and pods kits and will deliver an experience that is the most similar to smoking.

Shortfill vape juices come in larger bottles which are only filled to 80% full, hence the name. Shortfills do not contain any nicotine and the additional space that is left in the bottle is so that you can add the nicotine yourself. This allows you to add either nic salt or freebase nicotine based on your preference and allows you to mix it to your desired nicotine strength. Typically shortfills have a higher VG amount, with 70VG being the most common. This makes sub-ohm kits the perfect choice to pair with shortfill e-liquids.

Longfills are less common, but are a great option for anyone who is looking to mix their own vape juice. They contain just an e-liquid flavour concentrate and are in a bottle that is usually only 20% full. This then allows you to add a PG/VG blend base of your choosing and the nicotine strength and type of your choice to truly customise the final vape juice.
