What is E-Liquid?

E-Liquid, which is also commonly known as vape juice or vape liquid is a flavoured liquid that is used in every vape device. It is heated up in the tank or pod of the vape device, which turns the liquid to a vapour and this is what you inhale when vaping.

What’s inside Vape Juice?

Vape juice or vape liquids are made up of four ingredients - Propylene glycol (PG), Vegetable glycerin (VG), food-grade flavourings and nicotine. Nicotine can be optional, with some people reducing their nicotine intake to the point where they do not have any nicotine at all in their vape juice.

What is PG and VG?

PG and VG or Propylene glycol and Vegetable glycerin are two key ingredients in vape juice. They carry the flavour and nicotine and create the vapour you inhale.

Propylene glycol (PG) is a thin flavourless liquid which carries flavour and also delivers a stronger throat hit when vaped.

Vegetable glycerine (VG) is a thicker, sweet tasting liquid that also carries flavour, although less well than Propylene glycol. It creates more vapour than Propylene glycol, so a liquid that is high in VG will create larger vapour clouds.

The majority of e-liquids will use both PG and VG and vary the amount of each depending on the desired vaping experience and the type of device the liquid is designed for. This combination of PG and VG is known as the PG/VG ratio.

What is the best PG/VG ratio?

The best PG/VG ratio depends on the type of vape kit that the vape juice is going to be used in.

MTL: Mouth to Lung (MTL) vape kits are best suited to 50/50 vape juices. This will deliver an experience that is similar to smoking, with a noticeable throat hit and a tighter draw, making this a good option for anyone who looking to make the switch.

DTL: Direct to Lung (DTL) vape kits, which are also known as sub-ohm vape kits work best with high VG vape juices, with 70VG / 30PG or 80VG / 20PG the most common ratios. This combination will deliver more vapour and thicker clouds, with the amount of vapour increasing as the VG amount increases

What are the different types of e-liquid?

Nicotine Salts

Nicotine Salts or nic-salts as they are commonly known deliver a smoother experience so are perfect for anyone looking for a less harsh throat hit. They are also absorbed quickly by the body, so cravings will be satisfied quicker. Nic salts are designed to be used in MTL kits such as vape pens and pods kits.

Freebase E-liquids

Freebase e-liquids contain freebase nicotine which delivers a harsher throat hit when compared to salt nicotine. The degree of harshness increases as the amount of nicotine increases. With freebase nicotine the rate of absorption is lower than nic salts, so it may take longer to satisfy cravings, however the cravings are likely to be satisfied for longer. Freebase e-liquids are also designed to be used in MTL kits such as vape pens and pods kits and will deliver an experience that is the most similar to smoking.

Shortfills

Shortfill vape juices come in larger bottles which are only filled to 80% full, hence the name. Shortfills do not contain any nicotine and the additional space that is left in the bottle is so that you can add the nicotine yourself. This allows you to add either nic salt or freebase nicotine based on your preference and allows you to mix it to your desired nicotine strength. Typically shortfills have a higher VG amount, with 70VG being the most common. This makes sub-ohm kits the perfect choice to pair with shortfill e-liquids.

Longfills

Longfills are less common, but are a great option for anyone who is looking to mix their own vape juice. They contain just an e-liquid flavour concentrate and are in a bottle that is usually only 20% full. This then allows you to add a PG/VG blend base of your choosing and the nicotine strength and type of your choice to truly customise the final vape juice.

Choosing the correct nicotine strength if you are new to vaping can seem confusing especially when you consider there are different types of vape device and different types of nicotine to consider. A good starting point when choosing your nicotine strength is to first consider your device type, then the number of cigarettes you currently smoke daily. Does vape juice expire?

Yes vape juice does expire. Usually this will be 2 years from the date it was manufactured if it remains sealed. You will be able to find the expiry date printed on the bottle. Once your e-liquid bottle is opened then it will usually last up to a year. After the expiry date there may be a decrease in flavour and nicotine strength.
Can I take vape juice on a plane?

Yes you can take vape juice on a plane, but it will be subject to the same restrictions as other liquids. This means that you cannot take a container with more than 100ml into the cabin and this must be inside a sealed plastic bag. You will also not be able to vape on the plane. It is also important that you check the local laws of where you are flying to, as vaping and e-liquid use are not legal in all countries.
What does TPD e-liquid mean?

E-liquid containing nicotine that is sold in the UK is subject to regulations, known as the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD). These regulations set certain limits on the ingredients inside e-liquids and limit the size of bottles within which they can be sold. Currently, a maximum nicotine strength of 20mg/ml in a maximum bottle size of 10ml can be sold once it has passed approval. 

The TPD also sets out the testing and safety requirements of vape liquid. This also includes regulations for the actual bottle, including the nozzle size, safety features and the messaging on the bottle and box.
How many puffs are there in 10ml of e-liquid?

You can expect to get between 3000 and 5000 puffs from a 10ml bottle. This amount will vary based on the type of vape kit you are using, the power setting of the vape kit and the coil or pod resistance.
How do you open a vape juice bottle?

Vape juice bottles are fitted with child safe caps. To open the child safe cap, hold the bottle firmly in one hand and then with the other hand push down on the cap. Then turn the cap anti-clockwise to open

Can you mix vape juice?

You can mix 2 or more vape juice flavours to create a new flavour. For best results you should mix liquids that have the same type and strength. For example you could mix 2 nic salts which were both 50vg and 20mg strength.
