No, then let me give you some inside information about the global shopping event that has become bigger than Black Friday!
What is Singles Day?
Singles Day, also known as Bare Sticks Day, originated in the country where almost everything in the world is now manufactured, China. It is celebrated on 11th November because in Chinese culture the number one symbolises a single person and the 11th day of the 11th month when written out numerically show for single “sticks” (1111). In 2011, it was called the Singles Day of the Century as the date had six ones (111111) in it.
But how did Singles Day start?
The celebration of Singles Day was originally started by a group of students at Nanjing University in 1993 as a way to celebrate their singledom, as a sort of Anti-Valentines Day. During the earlier few years, it was known as Batchelor’s Day as it was only men as a majority that took part. This has changed over time, now referred to as Singles Day and it is now championed by everyone.
What does Singles Day have to do with shopping?
Alibaba, which is essentially the Chinese version of Amazon was founded by China’s second richest man, Jack Ma (net worth $38.9bn). In just 26 years, it has managed to amass to an event that is bigger than any other online sale, including Black Friday, Christmas, Boxing Day Sales and Amazon Prime Day. Other websites around the world also take part in the event which has now been dubbed the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival by Ma.
Which products sold well on Singles Day?
MAC sold 3700 Singles Day Special Edition Lipsticks in one second (1 sec) in 2018
Buick, the US car manufacturer sold over 7000 vehicles on the day in 2018
Within 30 minutes of Singles Day 2018, Apple and its Chinese rival Xiaomi had already made sales totalling over 100m Yuan (US$14m).
Nike, Adidas and Uniqlo also joined the 100m Yuan Club in 2018 with over $14m US Dollars in sales.
The 1.6 million bras sold in the first hour of Singles’ Day in 2015 would stack up to 3 times the height of Mount Everest!
By then end of the Singles Day 2018 24 hour sale, more than 200 other brands joined the “100m Yuan Club” too!
